“Count It” Campaign: Celebrating 25 Years of the WNBA

Growing up in Houston, I’ve admired and relished the game of basketball. My passion to play the sport intensified once the WNBA was established in 1996. I remember watching the first WNBA draft in awe because it was nothing more than pure excitement to see women pursuing a professional career in basketball rather than being upheld to society’s standards for what careers women should have.

Being from Houston, the Houston Comets were considered the Dream Team and it was the perfect environment to be in at the time where they won the first 4 championships. Those were some of the most remarkable experiences in my life because it helped me with my confidence and motivated me to be the best player I could be. My views on basketball changed immediately. I didn’t want to be like Mike, I wanted to be like Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes, Kim Perrot, and many more.

This year, the WNBA will embark on its 25th season since the league was formed in 1996. The game of women’s basketball has evolved and continues to evolve as time moves forward. The WNBA has provided a great platform for talented female athletes but they have also made a mark in society through their efforts in voicing gender inequality, LGBTQ+ rights, and social justice issues just to name a few. Over the past few years we have seen superstar players take a stand on more social issues than ever before. The WNBA has been one of the first leagues to restructure their organization to not only improve the game but to also support and give light to social and political issues within our country. Simply put, there’s more to life than basketball.

The “Count It” Campaign will highlight the league’s major milestones and initiatives in the sport over the last 25 years. The campaign will also celebrate current and past players who have helped evolve the league into what it is today. The 25th season will be set to honor the league’s greatest players through league and fan votes, highlight the 25 greatest moments in the WNBA, unveil a new logo, game ball, and newly innovated uniforms, establish a new advisory council that will help grow the game and it’s fanbase, continue lead efforts in promoting change in gender inequality, social injustice, etc., and debut the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup.

The WNBA continues to bring about excitement in the sport itself. More people are taking the time out to appreciate the women athletes and activists who have worked hard to develop the league into what it is today. Talent continues to evolve as each season goes by and there’s no doubt in my mind that the WNBA will be bigger than ever! Be on the look out as the WNBA embarks on it’s historic 25th season of high level and exciting talent in the game of women’s basketball.
