Why Rapsody’s Eve Album Resonates More This Year?

If you are a music head like myself you would appreciate the combination of meaningful verses over tight beats. I have my list of favorite rappers but over the course of the past year I’ve grown to appreciate Rapsody’s poetic and storytelling message to the people, black people specifically. History repeatedly shows us the inspiring lives of many black women and men that have paved the way for some of our favorite artists, athletes, creators, doctors, engineers, lawyers, and now Madam Vice President. To be black is an honor, to be a black woman is one of the highest honors despite the harsh rhetoric and often overlooked occurrences that we face in our everyday lives.

After the historic 2020 Presidential Election, seeing Kamala Harris walk out in her cream suit to give her VP acceptance speech brought a solidified moment our history among us black women. My immediate thought was how much Rapsody’s Eve album was a testament to all black women. Her mastery in exposing all different types of energies into one album is far more appreciated now than when she originally released it in 2019. The verse from Maya, “I can’t be no bird in a cage/my bad, I don’t wanna wait, no” gives so much meaning and motivation to accomplishing our goals despite the barriers that society places on us. We are multi-talented, business-minded, and strategic-minded leaders in this society. You simply can’t replicate the attributes of a black woman.

It’s hard to think that Rapsody is not talked about as much as other well-known rappers but she continues to gain attention through her trailblazing efforts in uplifting not only herself but other black women both past and present. Throughout the Eve album, Rapsody alludes to the battles that black women bear but also highlights the beauty and magical qualities in black women. In better words, black women are strong but we are also human too. Undoubtedly the best rap album of last year and this year, Eve is a true testimony to us all. It reminds us that we can plow through any and every barrier and rise to the top no matter the opposition. And at this time, a perfect example is our US Vice Presidential-Elect Kamala Harris!

To all my sisters, continue to make history in whatever you do! Our time is now!
